What is perimenopause ?
Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, during which a woman's hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone, fluctuate. This phase can start several years before menopause, often in a woman's 30s or 40s, and lasts until menopause is reached (defined as 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period). During this time your fertility is declining, but you can still become pregnant. Common symptoms of perimenopause include:
Irregular menstrual cycles-changes in cycle length or missed periods.
Hot flashes and night sweats-sudden feeling of warmth, often accompanied by sweating and redness, can occur both day and night.
Mood changes (like irritability or anxiety/mood swings).
Sleep disturbances.
Changes in libido.
Vaginal dryness.
Fatigue or lack of energy.
Weight gain.
Joint pain.
Perimenopause typically lasts 4-8 years, but this can vary. Perimenopause can be managed through lifestyle changes, hormone therapy, non hormonal treatments and natural remedies. These symptoms can vary widely in intensity and duration from one person to another.
Always speak to your doctor about ways that your symptoms can be alleviated.
